Canada’s political crisis is as scary as a plate of pancakes

In posse on 2008/12/05 at 8:22 am

By now you’ve heard the news that a coalition government was formed by the official opposition, consisting of the Liberals and the NDP (with support from the Bloc Quebecois). These guys got together to collectively oust Prime Minister Steven Harper’s Conservative government with a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons, after Harper failed to produce an economic stimulus plan to deal with the impending crunch. Now as far as Canadian politics go, I don’t think I was alone in thinking that this is about as exciting as its going to get up in here. All Canadian news outlets were running wild last night, trying to get a handle on what was about to happen, but I just couldn’t get over this:

While presenting the news and talking to the regular “AT ISSUE” panel of pundits, the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge was sitting against what appeared to be a slightly Transylvanian take on Ottawa’s House of Parliament, complete with dark and gloomy clouds moving menacingly in the background. I’m not sure who had the bright idea to do this, but it was easily one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on the CBC. All Mansbridge needed was a cape, some fangs and a widow’s peak and The National would have truly embraced the dark side. Was the situation really that scary? I mean, all the news anchors, reporters and pundits seemed to be elated that something remotely stimulating was happening, while the air of the broadcast kept pointing to the historical relevance of the day. All of this with Dracula’s Castle and the shadowy night looming in the background. Anyways, today, after meeting with Governor General Michaëlle Jean, Harper sneakily sidestepped the vote-down by convincing the head of state to suspend Parliament until January 26. The only thing scary here is the idea that the Conservatives could actually wrangle their way out of this one. Only time will tell. While you wait, you may want to enjoy a plate of really terrifying 3-D pancakes…

Vodpod videos no longer available.

  1. that was fdup. parliment at night looks dope. BTW did you know that Peter Mansbridge has no front teeth. Check it.

  2. just loving how everyone was waiting with bated braeth on the GG’s “decision”

    go ghurl!

  3. Ha…

There’s no impending doom….there’s nothing. These people are getting a Holiday ’til they reconvene.

I guess it’s cool, ’cause if the queens rep (i dont know why we need that remnant of colonialism anyway) said, “no, Yall need to work it out, snap snap” and the coalition over threw Harper, you better believe the separatists would have been calling in that favor at a later date….
